There was an Irish double at the Scottish junior opens.
Seán Keeling held off a charging Bryan Newman (South Africa) at Lundin to claim the Scottish Boys and it was slighlty more comfortable for Olivia Costello at Longniddry in the Girls.
FORMAT: 54/72-hole stroke play
Keeling was hugely impressive, compiling four under-par rounds, overhauling halfway leader Jingchen Feng (Germany) in the third round yesterday and then, in the final reckoning, he finished one clear of Newman, who birdied six of his final 12 holes to close with a 66.
With 36 holes on the final day there was always going to be scope for some big moves and the 16-year-old from Roganstown, who finished third at he Portuguese Amateur in February, did just that with his third-round 67 and then rounded things off with a 69 after lunch for an eight-under-par total.
At Longniddry, Costello was one behind Cookridge Hall’s Zara Ali going into the third and final round but a closing 72 (-1) was enough to secure her the winners trophy by four shots.
While the Yorkshire player dropped away around the turn, it was Roses rival Sadie Adams (Royal Birkdale) who threatened to mount a charge but, after eagling two and birdieing three and seven, the Burnley-based teenager finished in a tie for second alongside Ali and Denmark’s Nina Andersen.
However Adams did secure the U-16s title while Costello posted her third successive under-par round (72) on an eventful final day. The Connacht champion started bogey, birdie, double bogey, birdie, eventually easing clear with birdies on 13 and 14.
