Pavenham Park’s Luca Thompson came alive on the back nine of the Bedfordshire Ladies Championship, winning five holes in a row to get her hands on the trophy for the first time.
FORMAT: 36-hole stroke play / 3 rounds of matchplay
After nine holes the 19-year-old was one down to home-club player Chanel Fontaine-Geary in Sunday’s final at South Beds Golf Club.
But she levelled things up at the 11th and put her foot to the floor during a stunning run of golf which included back-to-back eagles.
“When Chanel won the ninth it looked like things were going the other way so it was good to turn it around,” said Thompson, who earlier this year won the Hampshire Rose Open.
A par was enough for the Pavenham Park teenager to get back on terms with seven to go and then she went birdie-eagle-eagle to storm ahead. At 12 she wedged it to three feet and then took full advantage of successive par fives. A stunning approach to six feet was conceded before she got another three at the 14th, holing out from 20 feet to go three up.
The match ended at the par three 15th where the 17-year-old from South Beds missed the target with her tee shot and then struggled to get on in three. Meanwhile Thompson also had to chip on but put hers to six feet and made no mistake with her par effort to clinch a 4&3 success.
