International ace Rachel slices eight shots off previous best
YORKSHIRE: Monday Sept 27th
England junior international Rachel Gourley slashed eight shots off the course record at Cottingham Parks while representing Close House in the North East final of the Junior Team Golf Championship.
The 17-year-old, who also broke the course record at Fulford at the British Girls last month, rattled in seven birdies in shooting a five under par (67) at the East Yorkshire venue in the handicap competition.
Rachel, who also set the lowest mark at Thetford when she was just 14, was part of a five-strong team which didn’t qualify for next month’s Grand Final at Ramside Hall. That honour fell to Lindrick.
Playing off plus six – her handicap index is 5.4 – Rachel efforts meant she finished one over par nett (73) and was really pleased with how it went, especially given the blustery conditions.
“The conditions were challenging,” she said.
“I played really solid. Unlike at Fulford where I was holing them from everywhere, it wasn’t like that.”
Making 16 greens in regulation was always going to give her plenty of opportunities and her impressive long game came to the fore as she repeatedly got it in close.
Her birdies came at the second, sixth and ninth which helped her go out in a two-under-par 34.
Further birdies followed at ten, 12, 17 and 18 which meant she came home in 33 (-3).
Rachel’s last remaining major competition of the season comes in the final of the Justin Rose/Telegraph Junior Golf Championship at Walton Heath next month (Oct 5-8).
