Spanish International Men’s Amateur stroke play concludes with John Gough as leading British qualifier
FORMAT: 36-hole strokeplay / 6-round matchplay
Thirteen Brits qualified for the matchplay stages of Spanish International Men’s Amateur today and four will go head-to-head in tomorrow’s last 64.
Most of Europe’s leading lights are taking part in the prestigious tournament and leading the way for the huge GB contingent was English Amateur champion John Gough.
The BB&O player’s reward for reaching the knockout stages in joint fourth is a meeting with fellow England international Jack Brooks. The experienced Lancastrian had a long wait to see if he had made it after carding a second round 75 and eventually made it on countback with four places to spare.

Another mouthwatering clash sees two of the country’s outstanding teenagers facing off. British Boys champion Jack Bigham (Harpenden) meets his international team-mate Josh Hill. The big-hitting youngster is based in Dubai and, earlier this year, made the cut at the DP World Tour flagship event – The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
There are also two intriguing England-Ireland clashes. The vastly-talented Callan Barrow (Royal Lytham) made it in comfortably and meets the experienced Alan Fahy while England U-18s/16s champion Harley Smith takes on another of Ireland’s victorious Home Internationals squad in the shape of Liam Nolan.
The first round matches open at 8.30am Spanish time with top seed Carl Siemens (Germany) tackling Belgian Jarno Tollenaire.
