It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘The first would have to be getting an eagle on the 13th at Birkdale, the hole where Spieth had his adventure on the range in 2017′
1) Your best round of the year and why?
My best round this year would have to be when I shot 74 (-1) in the Ladies Royal Birkdale Scratch. I am a huge Jordan Spieth fan and being able to play his Open-winning course was both an honour and a privilege. It was pouring with rain and very windy for the entire 36 holes and to be able to say I shot under par at Birkdale is pretty special.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
My best shot of the year would have to be when I holed my putt on the 18th to win the Hertfordshire Ladies County Championship. It was a downhill, breaking putt and looked in the whole way. It’s a great memory, especially as I got to share it with my whole family, who rarely all come to see me play.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
The best shot I saw this past season would have to be the winning putt from Matilda Castren to win the Solheim Cup for Europe this year. Although I couldn’t be there in person, watching it on television whilst I am in US at college (North Kentucky) playing golf was a very special memory. Although my American teammates weren’t best pleased !
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
I have two favourite moments of 2021. The first would have to be getting an eagle on the 13th at Birkdale, the hole where Spieth had his adventure on the range in 2017. I struck my iron perfectly to 12 inches for a tap-in eagle and very-near albatross. My second would have to be winning the county Championship. It was not a result I had expected going into the tournament and seeing my dad, who was on the bag as my caddy and his smile afterwards, is an amazing memory for me.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
My ambitions going into 2022 are to try and defend my county title as well as the regional title with my Hertfordshire teammates (East Region). I am also looking at having a strong season in the spring at college, as last year wasn’t a true season due to Covid. I would like to get a top 10 finish in my conference final individually. I am very excited for what is to come this year and all the amazing memories I will make along the way.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
If I could change one thing about golf for next season it would be having a more equal amount of women and men competing at the joint national events, such as the English Women’s and Men’s Amateur. I feel as though a closer amount of participants in each field will help women’s golf improve and allow more women to play at the higher level.
