Lincolnshire’s Kazzia Fox saved the best until last to win the England Golf Women’s Medal North Midlands qualifier at Belton Park.
Waiting to tee off at the final hole, the 18-year-old from Thonock Park checked the live scoring and knew a three-pointer would give her a chance of finishing first out of 68 entrants.
“I knew I had to birdie the last to have a chance of winning as I looked on the live leaderboard,” said Kazzia, who is due to Christian Brother University in Memphis later this year.
“From the scores that were in, there was two level par scores. I went and hit my best drive and best seven wood to get on the par five in two and rolled my first putt up to tap in for birdie!”
The superb four, her only birdie of the day, did give her a one-point victory over Blankney’s Mandy Horne and Elizabeth Wilson (Norwood Park) as none of the later starters could get past her 37-point total and she was one of six players to make it through to the Grand Final, which will take place during England Golf Week at Woodhall Spa in August.
Kazzia’s superb effort at 18 capped off a 20-point back nine (level par) and was critical as scoring at the top was tight. The six qualifiers were separated by just two points with Emlia Roach (Ashby Decoy), Linda Burrows (Astbury) and Tracey Klek (Beau desert) all finishing on 35 points to make it through.
