ESGA: South Yorkshire Schools (Hickleton GC)

DOUBLE JOY: Yorkshire and England player Josh Berry

Back-to-back joy for Doncaster ace Berry

ESGA: Friday, March 25th

FORMAT: 18-hole stableford

Three birdies in the last five holes at the English Schools Golf Association (ESGA) South Yorkshire qualifier completed an excellent couple of days for England Boys player Josh Berry this week.

The Yorkshire men’s champion’s stunning finish at Hickleton pipped Rotherham’s Jack Whaley to the title on countback yesterday. Both boys finished with 38 points after recording 69s but Berry came home in 34 to Whaley’s 35.

A day earlier Berry, who is believed to be the youngest ever winner of his county’s most prestigious title, was again two under par. This time it was at the Belfry and his round of 70 was enough to give him a two-shot victory at the Clutch Tour Golfstar Amateur Open. At the Ryder Cup venue he finished two clear of Brokenhurst Manor’s Matthew Piper.

At Hickleton, the 16-year-old junior international birdied 14, 15 and 18 to overhaul his county boys team-mate on the final green. The duo finished six points clear of Rotherham’s Luke Schmidt.

IN THE CLEAR: South Yorkshire girls winner Charlotte Colley

In the girls competition Phoenix’s Charlotte Colley proved a class apart and won by eight points from Silkstone’s Scarlet Brown.

Berry, Whaley, Colley and the other qualifiers will now move on to the North of England Schools Championship at Longhirst Hall on May 13.
