It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘Now usually a lag putt isn’t very exciting, however all our players and spectators were surrounding the green so when my putt had finished rolling and had been conceded, everyone came running on the green celebrating’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
My best round of the year was back in May in the first event I played. It was a 36-hole event at Long Ashton GC in one of our order of merit events. It was just one of those rounds where everything clicked, I’ve never driven the ball so well (important around LA as it’s a tight track!) After having shot +2 in the morning, I bounced back well with a -5 in the afternoon to win the event by one… an amazing start to the season!
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
My best shot of the year was a lag putt believe it or not! At South West Week at Burnham this year, on the last day, it came down to my partner Ed Butler and I to secure the win for Gloucestershire. The match was tight all the way, and we went down the last hole one up. After Ed’s approach shot to the green, all I had to do was make sure the putt got into gimmie range for Gloucestershire to win the week. Now usually a lag putt isn’t very exciting, however all our players and spectators were surrounding the green so when my putt had finished rolling and had been conceded, everyone came running on the green celebrating… just a fantastic feeling!
3) The best shot you saw and why?
The best shot I saw all season, or the best round, came from Mitch Waite when I caddied for him on the Euro Pro Tour. He got up and down on a par three – the 16th hole of the day – to keep hold of momentum and lead of the event. His Spanish hands are next level!
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
The best moment for me this season has to come from England County Finals. There is nothing quite like the feeling of lifting a trophy with your team-mates!
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
I’m already excited for the coming season, I’ll be looking to go one better with our county’s order of merit after having finished second this year. We’ll also be doing our best as a county to retain the England County Finals trophy!
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
There isn’t much I’d change about the game looking ahead. I love the traditions of the game. Just some more time off work to play in more events would be nice!
