Play-off joy for in-form Walsall junior

MIDLANDS: Friday July 9th

There is no stopping Jenson Forrester at the moment with the Staffordshire junior this week carrying off his second major title in quick succession.

The Walsall player won the inaugural England U-18s at Farnham at the end of June and on Tuesday added the Midland Boys title after a tense play-off with Northampton County’s Joshua Pritchett.

On Sandwell Park’s glassy greens the field struggled to cope and the leading score in the 36-hole strokeplay contest was two over par.

At the first extra hole both boys found the trees up the left with their drives and eventually ended up in more trouble behind the green in three shots. After chipping on, Jenson had first go at bogey but missed from six feet while his opponent could not deliver the killer blow from slightly shorter.

They moved over to 18 and this time both found the putting surface in regulation but the treacherous back-to-front slope was bound to test all their skills. The Walsall youngster managed to cosy his ball down to 18 inches but unfortunately his playing partner put his 12 feet past and was unable to sink the return.

Earlier in the day Jenson had been four shots clear at halfway thanks to a three-under-par 68.

However in the afternoon he missed a couple of tiddlers at 15 and 17 before closing with a 76 while Joshua birdied the last hole to draw level at the death.
