Portuguese International Ladies Amateur opening day proves tough for British contingent
Amateur champion Louise Duncan leads the British challenge as scoring proved tough on day one of the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Montado today.
FORMAT: 72-hole stroke play
The Curtis Cup star was the only Brit to break par (-1). In the 72-hole strokeplay event, that attracts the cream of European amateurs, France’s Maylis Lamoure and Germany’s Helen Briem led the way on three under.
With the top 40 qualifying for Saturday’s final round, a number of the English, Welsh and Scottish players face a challenge to play the full event. However Duncan will only have her eyes on the main prize after a strong start.
The West Kilbride star registered four birdies in posting a 71 while England squad member Lottie Woad is a shot further back. The Farnham GC teenager birdied 16 and 17 to get back to level par.
Close up behind her are England team-mates Davina Xanh (Mendip Spring), who posted a one over par 73, having been three under at one point, and Olivia Lee (Gerrards Cross), who is a shot further back on two over.
