It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘There was a massive gallery behind the tee and around the green so to put it to four feet, hole the putt and then hear the crowds was amazing’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
My second round at Open Final Qualifying at St Annes Old Links (-3). Although my morning round was lower, to follow it up with a -3, knowing what I needed to qualify, definitely made it the best.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
My tee shot on the par three 6th at Royal Sy George’s at The Open. There was a massive gallery behind the tee and around the green so to put it to four feet, hole the putt and then hear the crowds was amazing.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
I’d probably say George Mason in a Yorkshire match at Moor Allerton. At the 18th he hit a driver off the deck from 260 yards into the wind and over the water and knocked it on the green. We two putted and got a half.
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
Winning The Brabazon at Ganton. To do it in Yorkshire with friends and family there was great. Having been trending towards a win all year, it was great to do it at the last big tournament of the year.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
Just to keep getting better and continue with consistently good results going into 2022. Playing team golf as much as possible as well. Having played the Home Internationals, they’re great weeks and the atmosphere you have with your team is nothing you can compare to individual golf
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
Stay as competitive as possible leading into my main stretch of tournaments. Try and play as much as I can in the winter months so I can hopefully start the season hot instead of needing a couple of tournaments to ease my way in and feel comfortable.
