Langlands Bay junior Joe Jones will lead the Welsh Schools team against their English counterparts after winning his national championship at Cradoc GC.
The Swansea-based teenager, who attends Bishopston, shot a one under par 70 to finish three ahead of Harry Goffin (Welshpool School) and Rhys English (Lewis, Pengam).
In the girls event there was a tie at the top between Kasumi Tran (Greenhill) and Lottie Raymond (Caerleon) but the former took home the trophy on back nine countback by one shot (40-41).
Both winners gain automatic selection for the 8-boy-and-6-girl team who will take on England Schools at Rolls of Monmouth on August 30th. Joe will face an England side headed by its schools champion Thomas Hawke, who attends Reed’s in Bristol and, by a quirk of fate, this September the new Welsh champion is moving to that school’s sixth form.
The championship was played under a new format because of Covid. Entrants with a handicap of 18.5 and better took part in a medal while those over 19 competed in a stableford, which was won with an amazing 49-point return by Thomas Loynes (Llangatwg).
