A late surge from Bromsgrove GC’s Liz Haycock took her to a third Warwickshire Ladies County Championship at Kenilworth GC.
The 30-year-old teacher, who first won the title in 2010, claimed a 2&1 final victory over the highly-promising Copt Heath teenager Zara Houghton.
Liz, who also won it in 2017, led for the first time at the 15th and then took the next before seeing out the match with a superb up and down at 17, holing from eight feet for the title.
“I’m really proud I’ve still got the ability to win against the younger players,” said plus one handicapper. “The final was the best I’ve played in a long time.”
The Copt Heath youngster was highly impressive in defeating the vastly-experienced, mulitple former county champion Lisa Barton in the semi-final (4&3).
And she took that form into her clash with Liz, holing a long putt on the second to go two up.
The Bromsgrove GC player halved the deficit at the fourth and then levelled at 10 before Zara regained her lead with a birdie at 13.
But Liz decisively won the next three holes to win a competition which was played as a straight matchplay event for the first time because of Covid. Last year it was changed to a straight strokeplay format and before that was played as a strokeplay-then-matchplay tournament.
