It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘I drained a 35ft putt on the 18th, which I knew I had to make to win the U-21s but I didn’t know it was to also win the overall competition’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
I consider my best round of the year so far to be my first round of the Faldo series held at Goodwood because I had six birdies in one round, which is the most I’ve ever had! My putting was on fire that round; everything went in and if it didn’t it lipped out. I felt very confident when I had the putter in my hand, and as soon as I putt I would get the feeling of it going into the hole.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
That would have to be a 15ft putt I drained on the 18th during Sussex Ladies County Match week. I had to make the putt to win my match, everyone was gathered around the green. I left my approach shot kind of long and my putt broke slightly left to right. And this was when I just got my new Scotty Cameron Phantom X putter, which I swear by and Is the secret to me putting well. Definitely money well spent and recommend it to anyone looking for a putter.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
I can’t think of any off the top of my head however I follow the PGA /European Tour and LPGA Tour on Instagram and I’ve seen some pretty impressive shots.
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
I’ve had a few favourite moments this year. One moment would have been when my team (Northeastern State University), made it to nationals held at TPC Michigan! We were ranked fourth during regionals and only the top 3 teams went. We were six shots behind third place and the coach told us we all had to shoot one under or better on the last four holes to stand a chance and that’s exactly what we did. The suspense waiting on the last group, the last girl to determine whether or not we go as a team will be something I’ll never forget. However a personal favourite moment for me would have to be winning the U-21s Women’s Faldo England South II qualifier as well as the overall both boys and girls prize. I drained a 35ft putt on the 18th, which I knew I had to make to win the U-21s but I didn’t know it was to also win the overall competition. When I found out I was stunned to say the least. Being able to have friends and family support me made it that much more special.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
My ambition for 2022 is to win a few more college tournaments to have under my belt but also win some larger tournaments back at home and make some cuts in some big important events. I’d also love to gain some points to put towards my WAGR ranking, this is something new to me but I know it’s important to be higher ranked and in order to do so, I need to shoot lower so a lower scoring average is what I’m aiming for too in 2022.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
I would like to change my practice habits getting ready for next season. I’ve learnt a lot about my game and have started looking more into stats with my coach and have identified specific areas of weaknesses where I’m dropping numerous shots. So I want to improve on that. And I can’t forget about short game. My Up and downs needs improving majorly and for me. It’s where I gain so many shots!
