Gog Magog’s Miranda Brain equalled the Ely City course record on her way to winning the Cambridge Ladies County Championship for the third time.
The 27-year-old, who was playing off plus five, was the leading qualifier and proved her class with decisive victories in all of the matchplay rounds, including the final. She took the lead at the first and was never headed, running out 4&3 victor over Ella Mason (Ely).
But it wasn’t all plain sailing for Miranda. In the first strokeplay round she had a few problems with course management on the tree-lined course on her way to a 78 but put that right in the afternoon thanks to a superb, four under par 70.
“It had been a while since I had played the course and places I was aiming at with my drives turned out to be not quite right on certain holes,” said Miranda.
“I found a few awkward spots but put that right in the second round and it felt particularly nice to win here again. I won my first county title at Ely so it felt like a cyclical thing.”
The Gog Magog player, who first won it 2012 and repeated the feat five years later, made a very strong start against Ella and was two under par through five to go 2 up before the match took a pivotal turn.
The 18-year-old, who is due to go to Tampa University later this year, chipped in for a birdie at the par three sixth but her hopes of getting back on level terms were sunk at the next with Miranda holing from 35 feet for a birdie to take the hole.
The champion-elect also won the next with a par and would not lose a further hole, closing things out with a par on 15.
