We’ve all played in competitions where we hit a great shot on the nearest-the-pin hole but just miss out because ‘A Lawrence’ got it to ‘2’4’’’.
So spare a thought for those players who followed Warwickshire junior Joey Williams at the Nuneaton Open on Wednesday. The 14-year-old Moor Hall member sent his 7 iron arrowing towards the pin at 17 and it took one bounce before disppearing into the hole.

A Nuneaton member, who was overseeing the nearest the pin competition at the 150-yard test, was able to confirm just how the ball made it in for a one. The 14 handicapper collected a £50 voucher for winning the prize and also a hastily-made medal as an extra bonus momento. It was inscribed with his name, the date and the hole.
Joey didn’t win the competition overall and straight after the event headed off for a short break in Wales with dad Tom, who is also a member at Moor Hall, mum and brother.
And dad was able to confirm that Joey retold the story of his first ever ace more than once during the car journey.
