England’s highest-ranked golfer commits to playing in 2023 Walker Cup
NEWS: Friday, November 11th
The GB&I Walker Cup selectors have been given a huge boost with Lytham Trophy winner John Gough confirming he will stay as an amateur for one more season.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar couple of years. On top of triumphing in brilliant style at Royal Lytham in May, he has also recently won the English and Spanish Amateurs while being a mainstay of the successful England men’s side.
Gough was also part of the GB&I team that won the St Andrews Trophy so impressively in July and his availability will be great news as the home side bid to win the event for the first time since 2015
Gough said: “My goals for 2023 are to play the circuit one last and get a spot in the 2023 Walker Cup at St Andrews.
“It would be a pretty special place to play a Walker Cup.”

At No 19, The BB&O golfer is the second highest ranked European player behind world No 1 Ludvig Aberg while, as of November 11th, there were nine Americans in the top 10. Barclay Brown, who played in the 2021 Walker Cup at Seminole and qualified for this year’s Open, is the next highest Brit at 34.
GB&I have also lost out on picking Yorkshireman Sam Bairstow. The British Amateur finalist reached No 3 on WAGR before turning professional in September after he was invited to play in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Near year’s Walker Cup takes place in September (2-4) at The Home of Golf. It last held the event in 1975.
