Golfnews24.co.uk is lending its support to a new charity that hopes to introduce golf to people who wouldn’t ordinarily get the chance.
The Gary Day Foundation was set up this year by Leeds-based professional Gary Day. In 2015 he had a major stroke that has particularly effected the left side of his body.
In October he launched the foundation and last month began a series of sessions for the children of asylum seekers from war-torn Syria and Afghanistan.
He has already received the support of sportswear giants Puma, who have provided equipment, plus the Golf Foundation have also provided him with golf sets for beginners.
And this week golfnews24.co.uk editor Mark Flanagan presented the former Open competitor with three sets of junior clubs for children aged between eight and 12.
Mark said: “It is fantastic what Gary is trying to do through the foundation and we are delighted to support an organisation that has big plans going forward.
“It has been really hard for Gary but it is great he has come up with something that can only benefit golf and I am sure he will introduce hundreds if not thousands of people to the sport over the coming years.”
Gary, who played in the 2006 Open at Royal Liverpool and then went on to manage Cookridge Hall in north Leeds for the best part of a decade, was delighted with the donation and is really pleased with the response so far from the goling community.
He said: “Mark and golfnews24.co.uk have been very supportive of what we are doing all along and these clubs will make a big difference.
“At the moment the sessions are indoor but in the spring and summer we are hoping to take some of the children to driving ranges and these clubs will be perfect for them.
“It has also been invaluable to get help from The Golf Foundation and Puma.”
