Monday August 29th
A young golfer is now three quarters of the way towards his target of raising £100,000 for a vital organ transplant charity in memory of his father who died after an unsuccessful transplant.
Five-year-old Wigan golfer George Hughes was once again the star of the show as
Almost £23,000 was raised for Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant Association at the third Dave Hughes Memorial Golf Day at Wigan Golf Club on Friday.
George took part in a ‘beat the drive’ competition at the first hole and he has now helped raise almost £77,000 for the charity, which operates out of a special hospital in Newcastle.
George’s granddad Tony Sedgwick said: “On behalf of George and the family I would like all 184 golfers for playing in the third Dave Hughes memorial golf day.
“Everyone attending helped to create a great atmosphere, and the most important thing for me was my grandson George had a blast and loved teeing off with every one of you.
“Also I’d like to thank England Golf for presenting George with his award.”
England Golf almost took the opportunity to honour George’s remarkable fundraising efforts. On behalf of the organisation, Laura Yapp presented him with a Hero’s Handshake Trophy and he is now the youngest golfer to have received the national accolade.
The event was played as a fourball betterball (two best scores counting on each hole) with 95 points being the winning score of Dave Jukes, Tim Howard, Kev Houghton and John Cooper. They won on countback.
Supported by Quooker and American Golf, the fundraising extravaganza was also bolstered by a raffle.
