St Andrews Trophy squad contains four from England, three from Ireland and one each from Wales and Scotland
R&A: Wednesday, July 13th
Scottish teenager Calum Scott has been named in the nine-man GB&I team to take on the Continent of Europe side in the St Andrews Trophy in Slovakia.
The Nairn youngster, who finished third at the European Amateur Championship earlier this month, has been selected, possibly with one eye on next year’s Walker Cup at St Andrews.
The event has not been staged since the continentals won at Linna in Finland in 2018 due to Covid while GB&I won the previous two (2014/16).
The rest of the GB&I side is packed with experience and includes two of last year’s Walker Cup squad – Ireland’s Mark Power and Yorkshire’s Barclay Brown (England).
The GB&I team for St Andrews Trophy:
• Sam Bairstow, Hallowes, England
• Barclay Brown, Hallamshire, England
• Archie Davies, Carlisle, Wales
• John Gough, Beaconsfield, England
• Arron Edwards-Hill, Chelmsford, England
• Matthew McClean, Malone, Ireland
• Robert Moran, Castle, Ireland
• Mark Power, Kilkenny, Ireland
• Calum Scott, Nairn, Scotland
Power is one of three Irishman included – Matthew McClean and Robert Moran are the others.
Amateur Championship runner-up Sam Bairstow (Hallowes), Lytham Trophy winner John Gough (Beaconsfield) and Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford), who came so close to winning the St Andrews Links Trophy, are the other Englishmen selected.
Welsh ace Archie Davies, who attends East Tennessee University and represented the International Team in the Arnold Palmer Cup earlier this month, makes up the team.
The two-day event takes place at Penati Golf Club, starting on Thursday, July 21st.
