It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘I managed to play it exactly how I wanted leaving myself a short putt to save par’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
The final of the Northern Championships, where I won in horrendous weather conditions against quality opposition in the form of Karen Jobling from Yorkshire.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
This would be a chip shot on the 17th at Ashridge GC in the British Seniors. After messing up my approach shot to an extremely undulating green (for the second day running, but we wont talk about that!!) I played a 60° wedge from just off the green, up a steep section of the green, it had to be landed at such a precise point as to roll down at the perfect speed to the hole, in order for me to remain 1 up playing the 18th. My opposition Aileen Greenfield went on to make a fabulous birdie the 18th and beat me in the play-off.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
This came at Bentham GC in the sixth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes. My partner Julie Matthews, also from Sale GC, executed an amazing wood into a very elevated and slopey green (16th) to set up a 1up lead in the match. We went on to win 2&1.
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
Being chosen to represent England and be part of a great team, captained brilliantly by Angela Jones.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
Staying fit and healthy enough to continue to play tournaments and hopefully continue to represent Cheshire County and Sale GC in team matches.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
I would like to see continued steps in the inclusivity and parity for all who play this great game.
