Former footballer Martyn Paton bagged his second course record in the space of nine months at Gleddoch GC near Langbank in Renfrewshire.
The ex Rangers and St Mirren trainee, who played semi-professionally at Maryhill FC before a knee injury cut short his career, slotted in seven birdies on his way to a five under par 67 in the Saturday Medal, knocking one shot off his record, set in September.
But it could have been even better for the 28-year-old, who had four footer at the last for a 66.
“I think it’s fair to say the nerves kicked in over that putt,” said Martyn, who made local headlines last year for notching his 14th hole in one.
His heroics secured him the Class 1 prize in the both the gross and nett categories and his round kicked into life at the par five third. After short-siding himself with his third shot, Martyn chipped in for birdie. There was more drama at the par five 11th, where his 40-foot eagle putt hit the pin flush but stayed up.
