Two years on from finishing bottom of the Midland qualifier for the EG Boys County Championship, the six-strong Leicestershire & Rutland Boys turned that result on its head to take victory at Ashbourne Golf Club yesterday and qualify for the national finals for the first time.
With five of the six players counting, a superb 22 over par total gave them a seven-shot victory over Warwickshire, for whom Olton’s Seb Cave was the leading individual (-1). The competition has been running since 1982 and this was L&R’s first ever victory in it.
Leicestershire Boys retain Midlands title
Last year it was not played because of Covid so 2019 represented its last playing and then they finished 83 over as Northamptonshire qualified for the finals.
At Ashbourne in Derbyshire it was Kirby Muxloe’s Frazer Jones that led the way for the new champions. In the afternoon he reeled off 17 pars and one birdie. That matched the 70 posted in the morning by Cosby’s William Plant. Both played for the county two years ago.
The three-day English final is due to take place at the end of the August where Leicestershire & Rutland will take on the winners of the Northern, South East and South West qualifying competitions.
