England Golf name 15-man squad including four that are based overseas
England Golf today unveiled the 15 members of its much-changed men’s squad for the 2022/23 season.
New men’s lead coach Rob Watts will oversee the development of 11 UK-based players and four from overseas and only Zach Chegwidden, Arron Edwards-Hill, Mason Essam, John Gough, Jack Bigham and Ben Quinney remain from last year’s line-up.
In have come the likes of English Amateur runner-up George Ash (Hallowes) and 2022 Walton Heath Trophy champion James Claridge (Enville) alongside the bulk of last year’s England Boys squad.
“It’s a privilege to take the men’s squad forward into 2023,” said Watts.
England Men’s Squad – UK-based squad:
• George Ash – Hallowes GC, Yorkshire
• Josh Berry – Doncaster GC, Yorkshire
• Seb Cave – Coxsmoor GC, Nottinghamshire
• Zach Chegwidden – Orsett GC, Essex
• James Claridge – Enville GC, Staffordshire
• Arron Edwards-Hill – Chelmsford GC, Essex
• Mason Essam – Dartford GC, Kent
• John Gough – The Berkshire GC, Surrey

“Building on the foundations Graham Walker has put in place over several years, we have a blend of youth and experience in the squad and we’ll be working hard to challenge for the World and European titles next year.”
Unlike last year, a mini overseas squad has been included and that means a recall for 2021 Walker Cup player Barclay Brown (Stanford Uni), alongside Bigham (Florida State Uni), Frank Kennedy (Florida based) and Josh Hill (Dubai).
R&A unveil 19-man Walker Cup training squad
Those making the step up from the Boys squad are Yorkshire duo Josh Berry (Doncaster) and English Boys champion Dylan Shaw Radford (Huddersfield). The other two are Coxmoor’s Seb Cave and the 2021 England U-18s/U-16s champion Harley Smith.
Eight of the new England Men’s squad were named in the 19-man Walker Cup training squad last month. This year’s clash with the USA takes place at St Andrews in September (2-3).
