‘Watching Collin Morikawa accept the trophy live gave me goosebumps and helped inspire me to do what I’ve done this year’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
My nine under in the final round of the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship earlier this month. To shoot 63 on that course in such a big event was special.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
Having led from the front at the McGregor (England U-16s), I got to the 17th with a one-shot lead. The 17th at Camberley Heath is a really tight par four and I hit a perfect drive down there and held on to win by one from Josh Berry.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
Calum Scott’s drive in the first play-off hole when we played our last 16 tie at the British Amateur. We were hitting into the wind and he hit an incredible drive to leave himself with just 100 yards in. He was playing at his home course (Nairn) and there were lots of people following us so he must have been feeling extra pressure with all that expectation.
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
At the start of the year I won a Clutch Pro Tour event at Prince’s. It was absolutely freezing and there were 40mph gusts. My dad and coach were watching so that was brilliant because I was the first amateur to win one of those. I also have to mention being at The Open to see the prize-giving ceremony. Watching Collin Morikawa accept the trophy live gave me goosebumps and helped inspire me to do what I’ve done this year.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
I want to win a big men’s event. I want to play Walker Cup in a couple of years and winning one of the big ones next year will give me a good chance. I am also aiming for selection for the Men’s Home Internationals.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
I would make courses harder for the top amateur competitions and also for the main professional tours, especially the PGA. Even if they change the clubs, balls etc, Bryson is still going to be blasting way past the likes of Luke Donald. If they trick up the rough and bunkers more it will make a difference. Too many times you see how easy it for Bryson, especially, to get wedges out of the rough.
