It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘That was probably my opening round of the season, a bogey-free 66 at the Hertfordshire Bowl’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
That was probably my opening round of the season, a bogey-free 66 at the Hertfordshire Bowl. It’s not the biggest event but I really wanted to kick of the season with a good one and managed to do that.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
At Remedy Oak (playing for Warwickshire in the County Finals). At the fifth I had 250 yards into the par five and hit a two iron to a foot. It was one of those that just goes exactly how you pictured it in your head.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
I was playing with Rory Browne at the English Am and he was battling to make the cut. At the par 5 14th at Headingley, he mis-hit his tee shot and had about 220 yards in. He hit a six iron that literally stopped on the left edge of the hole. It was just a great shot.
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
Getting paired with my good friend Ben Quick at British Am. We’ve been playing at Beaconsfield Golf club together for six years. Beaconsfield haven’t had a player at British for 20 plus years, so for us to both be there and get paired together was great. Neither of us played great but it was a fun couple of days!
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
The 2022 season can’t come fast enough. This season I got injured early on and I’ve just had surgery so my golf the past few months hasn’t been the standard I would’ve wanted. I want to get another win next year and compete in a couple of the major amateur tournaments. I feel like when I’m playing well my game is good enough to win anywhere.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
I can’t think of anything I’d really like to change. Only thing I can think of is that sometimes some of the venues we play at are in the middle of nowhere. I have had to stay in some interesting spots. But if that’s the worst part of the job, we’re doing alright!
