Dominant Lorna McClymont makes it two from two in France
R&A: Thursday, October 27th
FORMAT: 54-hole stroke play
Scotland international Lorna McClymont maintained her dominance of the R&A Student Series thanks to another impressive display at Le Golf National in France this week.
Last month the Milngavie golfer, representing the University of Stirling, shot a 13-under-par 60 on her way to a one-shot victory at Montrose Golf Links.
This week the third year student again led from the front but this time did not take her foot off the pedal and finished 12 shots clear of St Mellion player Megan Giles (University of Plymouth).
The series takes in three more events in Portugal (February), Spain (March) and then the final at St Andrews at the start of April.
McClymont, who is the series reigning champion having record three firsts and two runner-ups in 2021/22, rounded things off in style yesterday at the Albatros course, eagling the last to record a final round 70 (-2) having led by five going into the third round.
The 22-year-old was delighted with how she closed things out, sinking a 30-footer at the last to finish one over overall.
“That was particularly nice as I hadn’t really held a putt all week,” she said.
“It was a pretty solid effort tee to green and I am definitely feeling more confident after what happened at Montrose. Also playing courses like Le Golf National really helps your development. It was testing in all aspects of your game and it was pretty soft under foot so was playing long too.”
McClymont opened with a three-over 75 to lead by one after the first round but back-to-back birdies at the start of round two helped create some daylight between her and the rest of the strong international field.
Yesterday she closed with two birdies and that eagle to ensure she finished well clear of Giles, who took second after McClymont’s Stirling team-mate Ellie Docherty fell away down the stretch.
The men’s event turned into a Sweden v Ireland battle and Halmstad University’s Jesper Littorin came through after a dramatic conclusion.
The World No 1136 won by one from fellow countryman William Leu and Hugo Stark but looked third favourite going into the final two holes.
Stark double bogeyed the last after bogeying 17 while Leu bogeyed both closing holes to hand victory to Littorin, who parred in from 16 having birdied 15. The next six places were filled with Irish golfers.
The champion opened with a 72 having finished eagle, bogey, bogey, double bogey, eagle.
