West Herts won the coveted London Amateur Foursomes for the first time in 20 years after a great battle in the final with host club Walton Heath.
FORMAT: Six-round foursomes knock-out
Zach Little, who narrowly missed out on winning the England U-18s at Woodhall Spa in June, combined superbly with the experienced Sean Kelly, edging out Mark Justice and Neil Williams at Walton Heath at the first extra hole to claim the trophy.
The West Herts pair played some brilliant stuff along the way in a competition that has been going since 1907. Clubs located within 40 miles of Charing Cross Station are eligible to enter at least one pair and the Hertfordshire club won it four times in seven years, starting in 1996.
Along the way Little and Kelly won every hole in reaching the quarter-finals with a 10&8 victory over Windlesham and in the semi-finals they saw off Orsett B 5&4.
How West Herts won it:
• Dartford 3&1
• Muswell Hill 3&1
• Windlesham 10&8
• Burhill A 1 hole
• Orsett B 5&4
• Walton Heath A 19th
Little said: “It was an honour to win such a prestigious event and to add West Herts on to the trophy for the fifth ever time was also a very nice touch.
“We played really steady, solid golf all week and kept ourselves in every hole and just made sure that we tried to put ourselves in a better position than our opponents.”
In the final the champions were never headed but had to survive a stirring comeback with Justice and Williams winning the 15th, 16th and 17th to force extra time.
However the Walton Heath duo lost their way slightly on the 19th and a par was enough for the West Herts duo to triumph.
