There was more reason to celebrate for Surrey club Windlesham as one of its brightest young things claimed the County Girls Championship at West Hill.
Just a few days after Windlesham’s Sarah Mardani won the full women’s event at Betchworth Park, her friend Ellie Monk enjoyed a thrilling victory. The 36-hole competition turned into a great duel with home club youngster Ellen Yates, who Sarah beat in the final at Betchworth.
“It was great to have finished my exam week for GCSEs last week and to be out playing golf,” said the 15-year-old England SE squad member. “I was a bit worried on the 18th hole approach with people sitting watching behind the green because it’s a fantastic hole and I didn’t want to overshoot and hit someone.”

Both Ellen and Ellie finished level on four under par but the latter came out on top thanks to better second round (71 to 72).
In the morning the West Hill teenager went bogey-free although the pace was set by Wentworth’s Millie Cottrell, who birded the last two holes to lead by one at halfway.
Unfortunately for Millie she struggled on the front nine after lunch while Ellie was a shot ahead by 27 holes and found four more birdies on the back nine to keep Ellen at bay.
