The Worthing Fox proves an unexpected star at Sussex club
There was one very curious and highly unexpected spectator at Worthing Golf Club on Saturday – an incredibly friendly fox!
The notoriously, shy nocturnal animals are often spotted prowling our streets at night but watching some golf by the Sussex coast at lunchtime? Surely not!
Well that is exactly what was observed by at least three groups of members.
Chris Mann captured the fox just as his playing partner Graham Kirkham was about to tee off at the par three 14th.
Chris said: “Dennis (Haynes) alerted me to its presence and I initially started looking further afield. I just assumed it was keeping its distance. But he then added ‘it’s right in front of Graham’.
“Then after Graham teed off I thought it would run away, scared off by the sound of the shot. But in fact it kept moving closer towards us. It wasn’t frightened at all.”
As the men walked greenwards, the fox even continued to follow them for a while.
Chris added: “We could only think that it has become used to being fed by humans.”
The fox clearly decided to make a day of it because it was also photographed by member Graham A Smith as his playing partner Peter Lewendon tried to tee off.
Other Worthing members to encounter the friendly four-legged visitor were Ollie Allen and Nick Trimmer while Steve Readman, commenting on the Worthing GC Facebook page, said: ‘he tried to pinch my ball’.
