Two-shot Duncan Putter victory for Lindrick player
Tom Osborne’s impressive start to the season continued in Wales where the Yorkshireman triumphed in the Duncan Putter Open at Southerndown GC.
FORMAT: 72-hole stroke play
The Lindrick player came fifth at the Berkhamsted Trophy last week and before that shot a 59 (-11) at his home course. The day before that he recorded a 61.
The scoring in Wales was never going to be that spectacular, especially in the final round as the wind got up on the heathland links test in South Wales.
And the 21-year-old stayed strong to finish two ahead of Glamorganshire’s Tom Savill having taken a one shot lead into the final round thanks to his morning 68.
“Once the wind got up my goal in the final round was to shoot around level or one over,” said Osborne, who was also delighted to have secured World Amateur Golf Ranking status.
“The first six holes are really tough and I managed to play them in one under so I thought I had probably picked up a couple of shots on the field and then I managed to finish well.
“It was really important to me to get WAGR points because I missed out on a lot of competitions last season so hopefully now this means I will play in some of the bigger ones.”
Yesterday Osborne made a dream start as he started the fourth round one behind his county colleague Jack Whaley (Rotherham), holing out from 30 feet but would have to wait until the 13th for his next one. He reached the par five in two and just missed from 15 feet for eagle.
On an afternoon when none of the remaining 38-strong field broke par, he escaped with a par on 17 thanks to short game excellence and then at 18, which was playing directly into the wind, he found the putting in surface in two and secured his four for a closing 73.
