Waterton Park bounced back into Division Four in fine style as the Yorkshire Team Championship continued at Northcliffe GC yesterday.
The Wakefield club had suffered back-to-back relegations but won Division Five by four shots from Headingley GC with all three of their players – Tom Hirst (+4), Ross Greenwood (+5) and Jack Owen (+7) – finishing in the top ten.
There was also fourth successive promotion for Ilkley club Bracken Ghyll, who were once again led brilliantly by Jack Lampkin. He had a pair of one-over-par 72s.
There was some standout golf played at the tight parkland course, led by Oakdale’s Michael Robson. He helped his club secure the final promotion place, thanks mainly to a morning 68 and at one point was five under thru 12.
Another player to make a blistering start to a round was Headingley’s Ben Rhodes. In the afternoon he began eagle, birdie, birdie and was also five under thru 12 before closing with a 68. That lifted him to second in the individual rankings and helped the Leeds club comfortably make the top seven.
The Division Four tournament takes place on June 9th at Middlesbrough GC while Ganton hosts the culmination of the competition (Yorkshire Team Championship) on July 27.
