Three birdies in her last six holes secured a first Yorkshire Girls Championship for Headingley’s Abigail Taylor at Garforth GC.
The 15-year-old, who this week is taking part in the England Girls Championship at Malton and Norton, enjoyed a great battle with Middlesbrough’s Katie Stephens, eventually finishing two shots clear on Sunday.
“Really pleased to be Yorkshire Girls champion,” Abigail tweeted.
“Thank you to the YLCGA for putting on a great event and to Garforth for hosting it. The course was in amazing condition.”
On the sun-baked fairways of the West Yorkshire course, Abigail started the second round two ahead of the 17-year-old from Teesside thanks to her best-ever competition round (-3). She was also three clear of Jess Hosking (Huddersfield), who faded out of contention in the afternoon.
With nine holes left the gap was still two but the Headingley junior bogeyed ten and both contenders bogeyed 11.
However Abigail re-established her two-shot lead with a birdie at 13 and also carded fours at the other two remaining par fives (15 & 17) to close with a one over 73. Bethany Norton (The Oaks) had the best round in the afternoon, recovering from a morning 82 to register a 69 and finished third overall.
Before lunch Abigail birdied four thru six and then the final four holes to open with a 70.
