Doncaster GC has always held a special place in heart of Moortown’s Robert Treweek so this week he was looking forward to returning to the location of his only previous win in a Yorkshire Union competition.
That was 35 years ago and wouldn’t you just know it… last night he claimed his second county title at the South Yorkshire course. A five over total was enough to give him the Yorkshire Seniors title, which is played as a 36-hole strokeplay event
On a remarkable day, the 56-year-old started the second round four back of halfway leader Gary Catt (Richmond) but in the final reckoning was able to edge out former Yorkshire captain Andy King (Garforth) by one shot.
“When I saw the fixture list and saw the Seniors was at Doncaster I think I had my speech ready for about a year,” joked Robert, who will compete at the British Amateur Championship at Ganton next month (July 6-9).

“Thirty-five years ago I won the best individual prize at a team event with rounds of 71 and 73 so I was actually a shot better this time.”
After opening with a three over par 72 on Monday, Robert managed to keep himself in the hunt yesterday with birdies at two and seven, where he chipped in. Despite the “beautiful greens” he struggled with the putter.
The long game was in good order but he was fortunate to avoid a potentially-disastrous score on the tighth 14 having dragged his tee shot into trouble up the left.
Just as he was contemplating a reload, his playing partner Stefan Priest (Hallowes) managed to find his ball and he ‘escaped’ with a bogey.
Despite dropping back to four over he would soon take the lead as Catt played 12 an 13 in five over to open things right up.
Robert missed 10-footers for birdie on 15, 16 and 17 and then bogeyed 18 but by that point he was in a commanding position. Eventual runner-up King had been in the clubhouse for some time.
“When I was on the 16th John Grimbleby told me Gary Catt had just taken an eight so I knew I had to be there or thereabouts,” added the Moortown man.
“But even before that I thought it might be close. Following up a good round with another one is tough and getting across the line is not easy.”
