Suffolk junior Issy McDonald made a truly ace start to 2023 thanks to a stunning hole-in-one.
Playing in the ‘Captain’s Drive-In Texas Scramble’ at Bungay and Waveney Valley GC on New Year’s Day, the 14-year-old holed her tee shot at the par three, 12th hole.
Sensing the significance of a morning hole-in-one on January 1st, Issy and dad James clocked the time – 11.30am. Could it be she recorded the first ace of the year in the UK?
Issy said: “I knew it was close.
“The ball hovered on the edge of the hole for which seemed like an eternity. I didn’t realise it had gone in until other golfers close by started celebrating”

James McDonald added: “It’s brilliant for Issy to get a hole-in-one so soon into her golfing journey. It puts her level with me now. It only took me 30 years.”
The 14 handicapper, who has been playing since the age of eight, used her five iron and found the target beautifully despite the tricky cross-wind.
Last year Issy, who is coached by club professional Chris Potter, was selected to be part of the Suffolk Girls development squad and hopes to one day play at county level.
