6.23pm: Hope you have enjoyed the coverage. It is my wedding anniversary today so have to go! We’ll be back for the duration tomorrow but I did say GB&I would be leading at halfway!
6.12pm: David Ford has endured a nightmare run recently and Mark Power has been there to take full advantage but the American hangs on at 17.
6.07pm: Hagestad finishes off the job on 15 and converts his fast start into an impressive 4&3victory over Alex Maguire.
6.05pm: Greaser misses his par putt on 18 and Liam Nolan takes the lead for the first time at the perfect time. Incredible win for GB&I.
5.57pm: So unlucky for Greaser on 18. nearly gets up the slope with his drive while Nolan is 25 yards away on the green.
5.53pm: Liam Nolan just misses to the left with his birdie putt on 17 and it will be A/S going down the last.
5.52pm: Mark Power. Talk about coming to the party. Looked dead and buried at halfway but is roaring back down the stretch. Great approach into 16.
5.49pm: Liam Nolan. Talk about the luck of the Irish! His approach on 17 almost finds the Road Hole bunker but is now 12 feet away for birdie. Greaser goes way long!
5.46pm: Take a bow John Gough. Won the first 5 holes and hammers in-form Nick Dunlap, the US Amateur champion 6&5. What a win.
5.42pm: Not to be Greaser on 16. A great chance to get ahead but Liam Nolan is sticking in there while Power takes the lead on 15! Great stuff.
5.38pm: The Irish trio in the middle order…three massive games.
5.35pm: Sargent wins 18 by holing a knee-knocker and wins the match against Jack Bigham by one hole
5.34pm: Oh no! Bigham hits a shocker from 115 feet on 18 and leaves him 20 feet short. Sargent responds with an average effort. Has 4 feet downhill!
5.32pm: It’s all happening. Nolan wins 15 and Power takes 14 and both Irishman are back to all square. Amazing fightbacks.
5.29pm: What a tee shot from Sargent on 18. Almost goes in! Incredible. Bigham also finds the green but his eagle putt must be about 5 times longer.
5.27pm: Jack Bigham misses his long par putt on 17 and it is A/S going the last. Sargent will definitely be able to reach off the tee.
5.25pm: Two great shots into 15 from Nolan and Greaser. The American is now just one up. Looks set to go all the way.
5.22pm: Calum Scott says “he was so nervous coming down the stretch”. he didn’t look it!
5.20pm: BOOM. BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM. Calum Scott birdies 17, his 8th birdie in his round to win the match. Stand-out performance and roar to match. Epic
5.17pm: Great few mins for GB&I with Nolan, Power and Gough all winning holes. It is simmering away nicely.
5.16m: Gabrelcik finds the Road Hole bunker on 17 in 2 and Scott almost lands it in the hole with his approach. Comes to rest 15 feet away. Legend!
5.12pm: Greaser.. what to do. Ends up 15 feet away. Would he have been better to chip it?
5.09pm: And a beautiful drive on 17 from Scott. Boy he is pumped. Gabrelcik also hits a corker
5.08pm: CALUM SCOTT! You little beauty. The home man sinks one from distance and Gabrelcik can’t follow him in. GB&I 1 up with 2 to play. Yes!
5.07pm: Massive drive from Sargent at 16. 417 yards and he has less than 30 yards to the green. His speed through the turn is extraordinary.
5.04pm: The lesser spotted Summerhays wins 12 and is now A/S with McClean. Big move from the American.
5.02pm: Good to see R&A secretary Martin Slumbers doing his bit to entertain the crowds.
5.00pm: Spotted Connor Graham walking up 16 with Scott. Great to see.
4.57pm: Austin Greaser misses a massive chance to go 3up at 13 but it lips out and Liam Nolan is hanging on in there.
4.54pm: Bigham is coming to the party and then some! Great chip on 14 from the Englishman. What a recovery from the 2021 British Boys champion.
4.51pm: McClean v Summerhays looks massive already. Scott has to win too!
4.48pm: It’s all over for Barclay Brown at 15, as his birdie putt putt comes up agonisingly short. Surratt has won it 4&3
4.43pm: Nolan misses a short one on 12 and the USA has had a bit of mini revival. Hagestad and Ford have recently extended their lead.
4.40pm: Relief for Dunlap in the bottom match as he wins 7 to cut the gap with John Gough to 4. He couldn’t could he?
4.38pm: What a turnaround for Bigham and he leads the World No 1 after 12. He was 2 down after 8. Great stuff.
4.36pm: It’s not be at 14 for Brown. Has a great opportunity to win his 1st hole but misses left…again! Surratt 4up with 4 to play.
4.33pm: Austin Greaser, who sounds like he should be the head of the Hell’s Angels, just can’t buy a long-ish putt, and he stays 1 down to Scott after 13. stays 1 up after 11 v Nolan
4.32pm: John Gough doesn’t win 6. Disappointing! The Englishman stays 5 up. Come on John…need to raise your game fella!
4.30pm: Austin Greaser, who sounds like he should be the head of the Hell’s Angels, just can’t buy a long-ish putt, and he stays 1 down to Scott after 13.
4.26pm: Calum Scott… is there a quicker player in world golf? Brilliant and rapid. Still ahead after 13 v Gabrelcik
4.23pm: I’m got to stick my neck out… GB&I will still be leading at close of play! Just feel we’ll get a late GB&I surge. #Heartnothead
4.20pm: It’s all getting very nervous. Lots of close-run putts but not much dropping. Noticeably Sargent at 11 and Bigham takes full advantage and it’s A/S.
4.17pm: Brown is 4 down with 5 to play. It’s all fallen apart for the Englisman around the turn. Surratt has been excellent.
4.13pm: JUST wow from John Gough. He has won the first 5 holes against Dunlap. Could this be a 10&8-er? Can’t have happened often in the Walker Cup.
4.11pm: Just the 25 yards for Surratt at 13. A tiddler!
4.10pm: Holy smokes! Brown is facing a 70-yard birdie putt on 13 after hoicking it… yes hoicking it and those on the 6th have to take cover.
4.07pm: Nicely poised…
4.05pm: Massive win at 10 for Bigham. Has been trailing Sargent all day but is now just one back. It’s all tightening up in the middle games.
4.03pm: Only at St Andrews. Gabrelcik shouts fore at 12 but ends up hitting a screamer to leave himself a 20 feet eagle putt.
4.02pm: Oh no!! Brown is 15 feet away in 1 and misses his birdie putt and is now 3 down with 6 to play. Surratt had chipped dead.
4pm: Nolan and McClean are also back to A/S. Is the momentum turning. The leaderboard looks a lot healthier for GB&I
3.57pm: Good couple of minutes for GB&I as Bigham puts one v close at 10 while Gough goes 4up after 4 in the bottom match.
3.56pm: Wow from Barclay Brown off the tee on the 12th. He is inches from his ball going close to an albatross! Great line
3.55pm: We haven’t seen many long ones drop so far. Apologies to John Gough if he has. Yet to see anything from the Englishman!
3.54pm: Surratt is 2 up with 7 to play. Have I gone too early?
3.46pm: Hagestad is running away with it in match 7. The big hitters on both sides are delivering right now.
3.41pm: Calum Scott take a bow. He is -5 for the front nine and he has to win this afternoon. He is 2up. Superb stuff.
3.38pm: The leaderboard is looking very red. Massive hour for GB&I
3.34pm: Almost an extraordinary turn of events at 9. Scott’s drive almost collides with a rogue buggy crossing the fairway. Was that Mike McCoy in that buggy?
3.29pm: Big noise at the 8th where Scott goes back ahead. His 4th birdie of the afternoon and it is turning into a special day for the Scot.
3.27pm: There is good news for GB&I in the bottom match where John Gough has won the opening 2 holes. Come on John!
3.24pm: Not a good few minutes from GB&I as Scott loses his lead and Power loses the 4th and Nolan the 5th.
3.20pm: Getting tight with the gimmes in the top match. Love to see it. I’d be giving nothing inside 25 inches. The 8th halved and Surratt still ahead.
3.15pm: We get to the first par 3 at the 8th and both players have slim birdie chances. It’s not the birdie fest I was expecting.
3.12pm: Surratt misses a great chance to double his lead at 7. His 10-footer just misses to the left. Still no bogeys in the top match.
3.10pm: But on the other side of the coin, Calum Scott loses the 6th and his lead is also halved. It’s very tight. No-one is getting away.
3.09pm: Big fist pump from Mark Power. He wins the 3rd to halve the deficit with David Ford. Massive for the excitable Irishman
3.01pm: Good to see Brown not conceding the putt at 6. It has all felt a bit too friendly. Where’s McGinley when you need him. Surratt holes it anyway and stays 1 up.
2.57pm: Calum Scott goes two up after 5. An excellent long eagle attempt from the Scottish star and he is the main man for GB&I right now.
2.55pm: Hagestad almost holes his 2nd at the first! The veteran will be a huge ask for Alex Maguire.
2.54pm: Great news for Liam Nolan at the 3rd. A great drive and good approach and a birdie gets him back to A/S
2.51pm: A terrible couple of minutes for Brown as his driving follows his putting. A big hoick left. Delighted to get the word hoick into today’s coverage.
2.50pm: Brown has got a worrying case of why-are-my-putts-going-left-itis and he goes behind at the 5th. That means the USA are up in four
2.47pm: Anyone like to suggest what Sargent will reduce the 600-yard 5th to? I’m going for driver and 6 iron. You heard it here first.
2.45pm: Surratt is deep in the doo-doo at the back of the 5th. Flops one up and nearly holes it. Seve-esque chip from the American.
2.43pm: Apart from Scott and Gabrelcik at the 1st, the players are struggling on the greens. The subtle St Andrews borrows are proving a challenge.
2.41pm: Barclay Brown hits a great approach at the 600-yard 5th. Surratt gets a flier and goes over the back. similar chips for the top players
2.37pm: Ouch! Mark Power’s ball spins back into the burn at the 1st. That front pin claims its first victim.
2.35pm: The green is 100 yards long at the 5th. Earlier this year I played with a guy who couldn’t drive it that long!
2.32pm: Surratt just misses at the 4th and it is still A/S in the top match. Some good stuff being played from Brown and the American.
2.31pm: Scott can’t convert at the 3rd but he is looking so good. With Bigham and Nolan looking nervy, those top 2 games already look important for GB&I
2.28pm: A poor start for Liam Nolan who 3 putts from 20 feet and loses the first to a par to Austin Greaser. The Irishman looks nervy.
2.26pm: At the third Gabrelcik finds to threaten the pin while the inspired Scott is a lot close. About 12 feet for the home favourite
2.23pm: Another gorgeous drive from Brown at the 4th. he has split every fairway so far
2.22pm: Liam Nolan just clear the burn at the 1st. relief as it misses wide left.
2.20pm: Calum Scott is one up after 2 to get some blue on the board and Brown just fails to go one up after 3 holes.
2.18pm: Two newbies in match 4 and both Liam Nolan and Austin Greaser are on the fairway at the 1st. Nerves settled.
2.16pm: Gabrelcik is in trouble at the 2nd and his bunker shot goes miles past the green while Brown hits a beautiful approach at 3. Good few minutes for top GB&I pair.
2.15pm: Shaky first drive from Jack Bigham and a shaky par putt…leaving it short. Gordon Sargent is one up in match 3.
2.13pm: Scott, whose brother Sandy played in the 2019 Walker Cup, is on fire. At the 2nd, he hits approach into 8 feet. Quality stuff.
2.12pm: More conventional from Surratt at the 3rd. He goes long while Brown also splits the fairway again. The top game is a/s.
2.09pm: The world No 1 is in the house..however drama for Jack Bigham, whose ball finishes inches from the burn on the right
2.05pm: BOOM! Scott gets the first birdie of the afternoon, sinking one across the green. Gabrelcik follows him in from 14 feet. What a start!
2.03pm: When I said wide left for Surratt I meant Baker-Finch wide. The American is on the cart path. Must be 50 yards wide of his target
2.02pm: Gabrelcik gets in it in pretty tight at the 1st (14 feet) while Scott is wide left but pin high. has about 20 feet for a birdie.
2.01pm: Surratt finds the 17th fairway at the 2nd while Brown takes a more conventional route. Beautiful tee shot from the Yorkshireman
1.59pm: Surratt just misses to the right. It looked great all the way. Brown also skims the hole on the high and it is A/S after one.
1.58pm: Match 2 gets under way with Nick Gabrelcik making his first appearance and a good drive. Calum Scott must be full of confidence and wastes no time and hits a long one.
1.52pm: The pin is right at the front of the first. The freshening wind is into their Faces and Surratt plays it very safe and has 25 feet for his birdie. Brown, with 111 in, goes right over the flag. 16 feet for birdie.
1.48pm: Barclay Brown will have great memories of St Andrews, having made the cut at The Open last year. He finds the fairway at the first, as did Caleb Surratt, who also lost this morning. And we are off.
1.43pm: Mike McCoy just interviewed on TV. Highlighted the two good opportunities on the last hole that didn’t go for the USA. On such fine margins can things turn.
1.40pm: Just seen the Preston Summerhays missed putt on the last. That’s got to hurt for the Americans in a match that always looked set to go all the way.
1.10pm: Here we go and we have a great-looking line-up of eight matches. Can GB&I keep their noses in front at the halfway point? It’s set to be a low-scoring afternoon of golf. The conditions look ideal for birdies and some of those par fours and par fives look ripe for the picking!
And below are some of the highlights from this morning. We have some stunning golf, particularly from all the Scottish pair of Calum Scott and Connor Graham, who were six under par as they beat Caleb Surratt and Ben James in 16 holes.
