England will take on Scotland for a place in the final of the European Women’s Team Championship at Royal County Down tomorrow.
The winners of the mouthwatering semi-final clash between sport’s oldest rivals will meet either Sweden or Italy in Saturday’s finale after a dramatic day of matchplay golf in Northern Ireland.
Yesterday Scotland finished top of the 36-hole strokeplay qualifying with Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe) leading the way. The teenager was nine under par for her two rounds and she maintained that form today by anchoring a turnaround victory.
At one point this afternoon the No 1 seeds were 3-0 down to Spain but narrow wins for Hannah’s teammates Chloe Goadby (St Regulus), Hazel Macgarvie (Royal Troon) and Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) eased their side through.
It was a lot more comfortable for England against the Czech Republic. Annabell Fuller (Surrey) and Charlotte Heath (Yorkshire) combined for a 6&5 foursomes victory and then both players won their singles as the No 5 seeds ran out 5-2 victors.
Wales struggled in the strokeplay stages and found themselves in the round-robin bottom tier with Belgium and Slovenia, who they lost to today.
However there was a silver lining for Harriet Lockley (Burnham and Berrow), who holed in one at the 10th during her 3&2 defeat to Lara Jecnik.
