Sustainability pioneers OCEANTEE this week paid tribute to south west golf club Bigbury as part of its commitment to highlighting Global Recycling Day (March 18).
Bigbury has built up a reputation for adopting environmental policies that have a positive impact locally, particularly its work with Devon Contract Waste, which has a zero-to-landfill policy. That helps divert more than 35,000 tonnes of waste away from landfill each year.
The efforts of the Devon club, which aims to be energy self-sufficient by 2025, were recognised at this year’s England Golf awards. It collected the OCEANTEE-sponsored Sustainability Project of the Year prize.
“Recycling is an integral part of the climate change cycle and helps in promoting and protecting global sustainability,” said OCEANTEE founder Ed Sandison.
“Clubs like Bigbury are incredibly inspiring. They have understood that even making small changes, like switching suppliers, can have a huge impact which is why we are celebrating their win again today.

“I am delighted to be able to use our platform to share their story and encourage other golf clubs to make positive changes.”
Other actions implemented by Bigbury include rewilding projects carried out in conjunction with the Devon Wildlife Trust as well as the installation of bat boxes and a five-year tree management plan.
It has also reduced chemical consumption by 55% over five years and introduced waterless urinals, saving in the region of 100,000 litres of water per annum. It has also banned plastic tees.
World-wide, recycling is projected to save more than a billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030.
OCEANTEE continues to use recycled ocean waste across its product range, including the innovative Pacific Cap collection each of which is made from three recycled plastic bottles. For complete transparency, the QR code in the back of each cap shows where the waste was collected and the journey it took to be recycled into fabric making these the perfect sustainable option for club cresting.
