South Yorkshire ace Sam Bairstow edged out fellow England international Jack Brooks to claim the illustrious Danny Willett Salver at Lindrick on Sunday.
The 22-year-old left hander from Hallowes GC took the trophy at the second play-off hole in brilliant style. His six iron to the 215-yard, par three 18th, finished six feet from the pin and, with Brooks in trouble at the back of the green, he holed the birdie putt.
“It was the best shot I hit all day but actually thought it was a bit short,” admitted Bairstow. “I thought I had hit it better at the first play-off hole and that finished short so it was nice to see it get back there. I’m not going to complain.”
The two England squad members both parred the first play-off hole after recording identical scores in the 36-hole event which attracted many of the top amateurs from the North of England in the 63-strong field.
The duo finished on two under par, four clear of late entrant Jack Ainscough (The Wynyard), who claimed third on countback from Hallamshire’s Julian Wood.
Because of a new tee there was always going to be a new course record and that now belongs to Northcliffe’s Jordan Clements, who carded a second round 67 (3 under).
