It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2022
‘But that included four 3-putts and a lost ball … which I found in the sprinkler head on the apron while walking back to the tee!’
1) Your best round of the year and why?
It came at Senior Open Championship qualifier at Hindhead. I managed to qualify but the score didn’t reflect the golf tee to green. I shot 73 to make it in on the mark but that included four 3-putts and a lost ball … which I found in the sprinkler head on the apron while walking back to the tee!
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
I holed a 30-foot putt on the 18th for birdie at Sunningdale in the Senior Open. It was nice to hole out in front of a packed grandstand.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
Stephen Dodd on 10th hole at Sunningdale in the Senior Open. I still don’t know how he got the ball to within four feet from cabbage and from well over 200 yards out!
4) Your favourite moment of 2021 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
Playing the first two rounds of the Senior Open with Stephen Dodd, the eventual winner and Jose Coceres. It was a great draw.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2022?
To stay healthy and earn myself a fifth start in the Senior Open Championship. Next year Gleneagles is hosting.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
As an amateur … the sliding scale on the World Handicap System. The whole concept is nonsense for low handicap golfers.
