It’s been a quite a year for amateur golf in Great Britain and we asked some our leading players what were their stand-out moments and also asked them to look ahead to 2024
1) Your best round of the year and why?
My final round at Moray GC in the Scottish Student Sport Golf Championship. I shot six under to climb from outside the top ten and into second.
2) Your best shot of the year and why?
The one that comes to mind would have been on the last hole at Hillside in the qualifying rounds for the knockout stages in the British Amateur. This is because I needed to hole out from 120 yards to make the cut. I was in the right fairway bunker and hit a 52 degree which I flagged. It landed just past the pin and spun back, lipping out.
3) The best shot you saw and why?
That came at the Student Tour Series event in Italy. It was by Ben Brookes at the 17th at Olgiata Golf Club. He was one shot ahead of the field and needed a birdie to keep his lead going down the last. He was 70 yards out and had a near-impossible shot due to an over hanging tree blocking him out. He hit PW,w landing front edge which rolled up the green using the contures of the green nicely leaving him and 8ft birdie putt, which he holed
4) Your favourite moment of 2023 (this could be personal or something completely random but golf related)?
That was going to The Open at Royal Liverpool on the Saturday and being able to watch the players warm up on the chipping green. The two players that stuck out to me where Victor Perez, whom stuck every pitch shot within three feet. And Patrick Reed, who had a touch of class around the green as he struck every shot pure.
5) Your hopes and ambitions for 2024?
My hopes for 2024 would be able to perform to a higher standard in the top amateur events giving me a chance to represent Scotland in a national tournament.
6) One thing you would change about about golf for next season?
I would like to improve my putting drastically and develop a better short game. This would allow me to become a more consistent player as it will take the pressure of my long game, meaning I won’t have to rely on my iron play to shoot low scores.
